Enjoy the amazing autumn colors and adventure of joining Icelanders gathering their wild horses from the mountains!
In September and October Iceland changes costumes from the green summer dress to the multicolor outfit of autumn! It’s an amazing season to travel around on horseback watching nature slow down for the upcoming arctic winter. This is also the time when farmers gather their sheep and horses down from the wilderness where they have spent the summer roaming around free in the mountains. This 6 day tour is a combination of a 5-day riding tour where we enjoy the autumn colors and ever changing landscape of the north, and a visit to the horse roundups Skrapatungurétt, Laufskálarétt and Víðidalstungurétt, where we join the farmers when they drive a herd of 500 young icelandic horses from the mountains and separate them in the roundups!
Meeting point is BSI Busstation in Reykjavík at 8.00 am. The drive to Reynhólar farm where the tour starts takes approx 2 ½ hours. After meeting up with horses and guides we take off for a nice first day ride in the countryside of the nortwest. We follow nice trails and enjoy great views towards the mountains of northern Westfjords and the fjords Hrútafjörður and Miðfjörður. One of the most famous outlaws of Iceland Grettir „the strong“ was born in Miðfjörður and stories of his adventures are connected to many sights around!
Today we will bring the herd along and on our way we‘ll ride along the riverbanks of Miðfjaðará and ride into the next beautiful valley called Víðidalur. There we leave the horses and stay over night at a nearby guesthouse.
We ride along the river Víðidalsá on soft riverbanks towards the sandy beaches of lake Hóp. We ride along the lake towards the farm Þingeyrar, once a site of a monastery founded in the 12th century. Overnight at a nearby guesthouse.
We start the day with an exciting crossing of lake Húnavatn and then ride towards Blönduós village following trails along river Laxá í Ásum, one of the best salmon fishing rivers in Iceland. Overnight at Glaðheimar cottages in Blönduós with hot pools aside.
We meet up with participants from other touroperators and local riders in the morning at Farm Strjúgsstaðir and join about 100 other riders enjoying this amazing day when the farmers bring their herds of young horses down the valley Laxárdalur where they have spent the summer in the freedom of the mountains. In the evening there is a local Round up Dance party in a community center nearby, welcoming those who still have the energy after the long day.
After breakfast we visit the roundups where the farmers are separating the horses in the morning. Around noon we will start our drive back to Reykjavík and drop off location is BSI Busstation (around 15-16 pm).
