Kjölur
Tour description
On this unique highland adventure, you will ride on the oldest trail in Iceland which lies across the island, between two of our biggest and most impressive glaciers. Experience our stunning country while riding across the heart of Iceland.
Since the Viking era, the ancient Kjölur trail has been an essential and popular trail to travel across the highland desert. Riding over a desert plateau in the inlands of Iceland you will explore the area which was known back in time for roaming outlaws, elves, ghosts and evil spirits.
Accommodation: During the ride accommodation and facilities are shared. Our mountain ride tours offer simple accommodations in sleeping bags. Please bring your own! Sometimes the whole group stays together in one large room.
Gústi and Jónína have been running the world-renowned Kjölur tour now for four years. Gústi is born and bred in the area and has been riding since he could walk. They have been receiving raving reviews from their customers from the very beginning. No matter if it is their horses, their cooking, their cheerfulness, and hospitality. The wilderness is their home turf, and they love sharing it with their guests.

We drive in the morning to Myrkholt, where we meet our guides and the horses and then start the ride. We will head to the beautiful waterfall, Gullfoss and onwards to a mountain called Bláfell where we will spend the night.
We cross Hvítá (White river) and enjoy the all-surrounding scenery and the view to the glacier-filled lake Hvítárvatn. We will spend the night in Árbúðir on the banks of Svartá (Black river).
We continue our ride along the rough lava field Kjalhraun enjoying the spectacular view of two striking glaciers Langjökull and Hofsjökull on soft and sandy riding paths. While riding across Kjalhraun we will share folk tales while enjoying the magical unspoiled nature. Our destination is Hveravellir, a unique geothermal area between the glaciers.
We follow the river Blandá northwards, cross the river Strangákvisl and turn eastwards on the shore.
Today’s route leads us further north over the gorgeous river Seyðisá where the horses run free with us on the soft paths of this mystical highland area. Our cabin for the night is Galtará Cabin.
We are getting closer to the green valleys with our horses running freely over the soft riding paths of the northern highlands. All good things come to an end as we arrive to our final destination Steinstadir in Skagafjördur. We celebrate a successful tour with a great farewell dinner, storytelling and singing.
We say goodbye to our host and guides after enjoying our breakfast and head back to Reykjavik.
