Mountain huts and wilderness
This part is ideal for those who love the wilderness and primitive accommodations in mountain huts along the way. The huts are well equipped and big and located alone in the wilderness at various destinations in the highlands. 4 of 6 nights are in mountain huts with our horses grazing just outside the door all night.

Itinerary
The meeting point is at BSÍ bus station in Reykjavík at 8.00 am.
We drive to Skagafjörður where the tour starts at Sveinsstaðir farm (approx. 4 hours drive) after a short introduction we saddle up and ride up to the highlands through Gilhagadalur valley. We come to Lake Aðalsmannsvatn and then follow a nice trail in the highlands to Galtará mountain cabin.
We ride across the Dam of Blöndulón and along river Kolkukvísl through Eyvindarstaðaheiði heathlands. We cross river Vatnsdalsá and follow river Strangakvísl to the mountain hut Öndvegi.
We keep on following highland trails along Grímstaðaheiði enjoying the wilderness with all its pure Icelandic nature. We come to the mountain cabin Haugakvíslarskáli in the afternoon for another night in the wilderness.
We keep on riding through the highlands of the northwest through moorland and wetlands with nice valleys and rivers around. Overnight at Fosshóll mountain cabin.
Today we enjoy the last breaths of the highlands and ride down to Víðidalur valley. We end our ride at Víðidalstunga farm and drive with our little bus to Reynhólar farm where we stay overnight.
We ride across Fitjárdalur towards Miðfjörður and follow the river Miðfjarðará along soft river banks. We cross the river at a passing and ride directly home to Reynhólar where we end the ride and stay the last night.
After breakfast, we drive with our little bus back to Reykjavík ( 3 hours drive).
