FAQ - Domestic Transport
If you are booking a tour with us which does not include the domestic flights/transport, this information might be useful for you.
Saltvík farm, where your tour will take place, is located in the north-east of Iceland, close to (only 4km south of) the town of Húsavík. The biggest town in the north of Iceland is Akureyri, which is 1 hour drive (to the west) away from our farm.
There is a good connection of domestic flights between Reykjavík downtown and Akureyri (about 4 flights daily), but there‘s also a bus connection between those 2 biggest cities in Iceland.
There are even a few international flights flying straight to Akureyri from several places in Europe. It might be worth checking out if one of those options is available from an airport close to where you live. For example Easyjet is flying in winter between London and Akureyri. There might be some Transavia flights between The Netherlands and Akureyri. And also Icelandair has few flights directly from Europe to Akureyri.
However, we realise most of our guests will first have to arrive to the main international airport of Iceland; Keflavik, which is about 50 min drive from Reykjavík. So here will follow a list of options for getting to our farm after your international flight arrives to Iceland:
- Renting a car. If you‘d like to stay a bit longer in Iceland/see different area‘s, you could consider renting a car and drive up to Saltvík farm. Driving time between Reykjavík and Saltvík with a few short stops is about 6-7 hours. Driving in Iceland is, in summertime, rather easy. The roadsystem is simple and the roads are pretty good and except for rush hour in Reykjavík not very busy.
- Book your return flight from home to Akureyri (instead of ending your first flight at Keflavík airport) with Icelandair. You will in this case almost always have to switch airports (meaning; you‘ll arrive at Keflavík airport, take the flybus to the domestic airport downtown Reykjavík for your ongoing flight to Akureyri). This is a very good option if you want to arrive to Iceland and travel straight on to the north. Note that you‘d need about a 3 hours in between flights since you‘d have to collect your luggage, take the 50 min drive by flybus, and then check in (45 min prior to departure) to the domestic flight again. With this option, you‘re as well covered for flightchanges or delays which could affect your other flight.
- Book a return flight Reykjavík – Akureyri with Icelandair separate from your international flight (with any company). As in option nr 2, you‘d have to take the flybus between Keflavík airport and Reykjavík downtown. You could either stay one or more days in Reykjavík before or after the tour, and/or take some (guided) tours in the south before or after your ridingtour.
- Take the bus from Reykjavík to Akureyri and/or vice versa. Most days there is a good/direct connection between the 2 cities. Ideal if you‘d like to see a bit more of Iceland on your way without driving yourself. The bus doesn‘t stop at special places for sightseeing, but it is just nice to stare out of your window and see a bit of the country.
- Combine options 1 and 4, or combine either of those 2 options with a one way flight to have both the possibility to see more of the country one way and a quick trip between south and north by plane.
Depending on the option you‘d choose, and how it all connects, you could stay one or more nights in Reykjavík or in Akureyri, or both of course. Both cities are nice to spend a day or so. There are plenty options for accommodation depending on what you prefer. Easy to find through the regular booking channels. Both cities have taxi services to get around from/to airport/busstation and hotels/guesthouses.
For participants on the Northern Lights tours and Saltvík Comfort tours we offer free pick up from Akureyri airport or Hof busstation between 8-9 am on the mornings the tour starts. This usually connects to the early morning flight from Reykjavík.
If you‘d like to come to Saltvík by your own transport/rental car, please make sure you are at our place around 10:00 am. If you hand in a rental car in Húsavík, we can pick you up there!
