Itinerary
As soon as we get in the saddle we’ll experience the open highlands to the south. We head over Möðrudalsfjallgarðar mountain range with black sandplains until we’ll take a break at Sænautasel. Sænautasel is a turf farm that has a lot of history and interesting old buildings. Then we continue over grassland on sheep trails, passing lakes and mountains until we descend into Jökuldalur valley with its many sheep farms.
Our destination is one of those sheep farms, and our host Aðalsteinn is a farmer and reindeer hunter. The Icelandic Saga; Hrafnkelssaga took place here.
On this day we’ll cross the Hrafnkelsá river and ride around Háurð, heading up along Hölkná river where we’ll be entering the reindeer trails. The reindeer only live in east Iceland, are all wild and don’t belong to anyone. We’ll continue between Skálarfjall and Hölkná river, making a detour around the wetland area, until we turn to Eyvindarfjöll mountains, named after our most famous outlaw; Eyvindur. He and his wife Halle, survived in the Icelandic wilderness for decades, escaping the law. After passing a small mountain we’ll arrive at our destination; a newly restored and modern mountain hut built by the sheep farmers, which they use when they gather the sheep in autumn.
From Fjallaskarð we’ll head west following Eyvindará river. We’ll have a great view over the vast highlands and see mountain Snæfell, (the highest mountain in Iceland, apart from the glaciers).
The ride is partly through heath land, following sheep trails until we get to an old mud road. Finally we are at the edge of the highlands, overlooking the green Fljótsdalur valley with the big Lagarfljót lake, many rivers and high cliffs. We’ll take an old winding trail down, along a great canyon, Bessastaðagljúfur.
When we come down we have arrived at our destination in Fljótsdalur. Overnight in a community center with all necessary facilities.
From Fljótsdalur we’ll head into Hallormsstaður forest on great winding riding paths that lead us up to the Hallormsstaður ridge. Here we’ll have a great view all the way to the ocean in the north, to Mt. Snæfell in the southwest and Lake Lagarfljót in the north-west. After riding on the ridge for a while we’ll ride down to Skriðdalur valley. There we’ll stay in a cosy local community hall.
On this day we’ll ride through Fljótsdalshérað, the sunniest area of Iceland.
We’ll ride through farmland, passing horse, cow, and sheep farms in this really green and blooming area.
Our destination is Eiðar, a former school and church site, with a view over lake Lagarfljót.
Today we’ll move slowly out of civilization, passing abandoned farms, and following the river Selfljót. At midday we are at the seaside, by the black big beach Héraðssandur. We’ll start climbing a small mountain that gives us an even better view and pass an old abandoned outpost from the Danish merchants. When we get over the mountain pass a beautiful view appears of big mountains. We’ll ride to the seaside of the east to Njardvík, a small bay at the east coastline where we’ll end our first part of the Dream tour.
Transport by bus to Egilsstaðir airport for the flight back to Reykjavík.
