Part 1 – The Arctic North

Saltvík – Þeistareykir – Meiðavellir – Valþjófsstaður – Reystarnes – Melrakkaslétta – Raufarhöfn – Þistilfjörður
We ride from Saltvík up to the higher grounds of Reykjaheiði, through lavafields and moorlands to our destination at Þeistareykir geothermal area with hot springs all around.
Then we follow the old historical Bláskógar trail to Meiðavellir farm near the national park Ásbyrgi, and follow from there the whole coastline along the shores of Öxarfjörður to Kópasker village where sometimes seals can bee seen either resting at the beach or swimming in the sea!
We ride around Melrakkaslétta peninsula with an amazing views out to the arctic see with the arctic circle situated just outside the shores. We will ride to Rifstangi the most northern edge of Iceland and ride to Raufarhöfn where we‘ll be visiting the arctic henge near the village.
Then we ride on, following the coastline to Þistilfjörður with big mountains on one side and the sea on the other while we ride our last day to a farm in the area where we leave the horses and head back to Saltvík for the last night.

Accomodation: at Saltvík Farm in the beginning and end of the tour and at a nice hostels in Kópasker and Raufarhöfn village at the seasides of Melrakkaslétta peninsula.

Itinerary

24.7 Saltvík – Þeistareykir (30 km / 5-6 hours)

We start the ride from Saltvík farm and ride up to the heathlands of Reykjaheiði, we ride through lavafields and follow nice trails in the highlands until we come to the geothermal area of Þeistareykir where we leave the horses. Overnight at Saltvík farm with hot pools aside.

25.7 Þeistareykir – Meiðavellir (30 km / 5-6 hours)

We ride from the hot springs of Þeistareykir through lavafields and green heathlands of Kelduhverfi. We follow the old trail through the beautiful Bláskógar area “Blue forest” until we come to the farm Meiðavellir located next to Ásbyrgi national park. Overnight at Saltvíkfarm.

26.7 Meiðavellir – Valþjófsstaður (35 km / 5-6 hours)

We ride along the edge of Ásbyrgi Canions to river Jökulsá where we cross on a bridge, then we follow trails through the farmlands of Öxarfjörður until we come to Valþjófsstaður near the little village of Kópasker where we stay over night.

27.7 Valþjófsstaður – Reistarnes (25 km 4-5 hours)

We ride through the little village Kópasker and then along nice trails to the coastline of the arctic sea. We end the day at farm Reistarnes and drive back to Kópasker for the night.

28.7 Reistarnes – Sigurðarstaðir (30 km / 5-6 hours)

Now we start following the coastline of the north coast and enjoy the view to the arctic circle out there! We end the day at farm Sigurðarstaðir where we leave the horses and drive with our bus to Raufarhöfn village nearby where we stay over night.

29.7 Sigurðarstaðir – Raufarhöfn (30 km / 5-6 hours)

We keep on riding along the coastline of the north all the way to the village Raufarhöfn where we stay another night.

30.7. Raufarhöfn – Svalbarð (40 km 6-7 hours)

We leave the little village in the morning and ride on along the coast to Þistilfjörður fjord, nice trails and views all day on our last day of the journey. We leave the horses at Svalbarð Farm and drive home to Saltvík for the last night and farewell dinner.
