Itinerary
The day starts with a ride through the little village of Borgarfjörður. On we go into the valley and ride to our destination Breiðavík.
Breiðavík is an abandoned bay and mostly visited by hikers. The hikers association keeps a nice big cabin there, where we will stay.
Our destination is one of those sheep farms, and our host Aðalsteinn is a farmer and reindeer hunter. The Icelandic Saga; Hrafnkelssaga took place here.
From silent and beautiful Breiðavik we’ll head on riding through colorful mountains. All this area has been abandoned quite some time ago since it is so remote. The color of liparite rocks is strongly present here, and the big mountains like Dyrfjöll are quite spectacular. Here the ride feels like a dream, in between the lonely mountains. Finally we’ll arrive in Loðmundarfjörður, a fjord that used to have many farms and today there is still a church standing there, even though it’s been decades since the
inhabitants left the fjord. Those who enjoy stunning nature and quietness are often seen here for a visit during the summer months.
Overnight in a big cabin with good facilities.
Since there is a lot to explore and enjoy, we will stay in Loðmundarfjörður for another day riding around in the area.
Today we head back riding through a variety of ocean view, colorful mountains like Mt. Hvítserkur and ride to Hvannstóð. Then we drive to the Harbor of the tiny town of Borgarfjörður, because it is the best place to get really close to the puffins. This night we stay overnight in a guesthouse in this charming village that has only one street and a harbor, so you shouldn’t get lost.
Here they have a mysterious elves (hidden people) church, and Iceland’s most famous painter, Kjarval, is from here. It is obvious to see where he got his motives from.
After a nice stay at Borgarfjörður we’ll get back to our horses at Hvannstóð and start to head back from the fjords over the mountain pass Sandaskörð, having a view over Héraðsflói bay. Then we’ll be following down the river Sandá until getting to the farm Hjaltastaðir.
Spending the night in a community hall nearby.
Today we’ll ride on flat ground all day. We’ll cross the big Lagarfljót river on a bridge and head past some farms until we turn more off-track on sandy paths. Around us are a number of mountains like Hellisheiði and Dyrfjöll.
When we arrive at Húsey, you might see some seals on the river and the land we are riding on is all sand that the river has moved here from the glacier.
Overnight at the holiday farm Húsey which is a unique place with 23 species of birds nesting here and the farm itself has a special charm.
Now we’ll ride back towards the highlands on great riding tracks. You can see how the glaciers and rivers have shaped this country. The strong green colors are a big contrast with the black sand, but slowly we’ll move into green farmland. We’ll end part 2 at Hallfreðastaðir farm.
Overnight at a community centre nearby.
After breakfast we’ll drive to Egilsstaðir airport for the flight back to Reykjavík.
