Part 3 Hidden Valley of the North
Akrar – Torfunes – Heiðarhús – Hof – Hof – Þverá – Eyjadalsá – Mýri
We start the ride in the countryside riding through the valleys Reykjadalur and Aðaldalur. Then a long day high up in the mountains where we cross through the hostorical passing of Gönguskarð into the hidden valley Flateyjardalur wich is truly a magical place, filled with stories from the past and rich vegetation between high mountains on both sides.
We follow the valley down to the shore and spend a day there enjoying beautiful landscape and peaceful atmosphere wich is unique at this magical place. It‘s a tradition to take a dip in the arctic ocean at least when the weather is reasonble for a cold bath! We ride back up the valley through Ljósavatnsskarð and into Bárðardalur valley, one of the longest valleys in Iceland. We follow great trails at the riverbanks of Skjálfandfljót all the way to Mýri, which, as the last farm of the north, holds the key to the higlands of Sprengisandur trail before travellers hit the road across the highlands.
Accomodation: at Saltvík farm in the beginning and end of the tour and cozy mountain huts in Flateyjardalur valley.

Itinerary
We start our ride from farm Akrar in Reykjadalur, then we head to higher grounds over Fljótsheiði and make a good break at Goðafoss waterfall! We ride down along river Skjálfandafljót through a small forrest, enjoy the view to the waterfalls Barnafoss and Ullarfoss and then end the ride at farm Torfunes. Overnight at Saltvík farm with hot pool on side.
Today is the toughest day of the tour when we cross the highland passing Gönguskarð, an old trail, used to get the shortest way in to Flateyjardalur valley. On the way are steep trails where we step off our horses and walk the last bit up to the passing. Coming down on the other side is something to remember when the valley opens up with all its magical surroundings. We ride down the valley to the cosy mountain hut Heiðarhús where we stay over night with the horses grazing around the hut.
Today is an easy day when we ride down to the shores at the end of the valley. Our destination is a nice hut just at the seaside of the arctic sea. Nice dip in the ocean is a traditional evening sport this day.
We start the day with a 1 horse riding tour in the valley enjoying the peace and quiet and amazing views all around. After a good lunch break we ride back to Heiðarhús for the night.
We ride up the valley and in to another valley; Fnjóskadalur. We are now in the countryside with farms around until we come to Litlu Tjarnir where we leave the horses and drive back home to Saltvík for the night. Hot tubs at Saltvík will be well deserved this evening!
We ride into Bárðardalur valley and follow river Skjálfandafljót on nice trails to farm Eyjadalsá where we leave the horses and drive back home to Saltvík for the night.
We ride all day along the river enjoying the last day on really nice riding trails in the valley. At Mýri farm we leave the horses who get now 2 days of rest at the edge of the highlands for upcoming rides on part 4 across the highlands. Last night we spend at Saltvík farm.
