Horses on Ice – Winterride & Northern lights special edition
Book now
We offer now a special edition of our popular winter ride & northern lights tour. This tour is 1 day longer (4 riding days) than our regular winter tours and includes a visit to lake Mývatn both for riding on the ice and enjoy watching Icelandic riders competing with their horses at the annual ice ride competition at Lake Mývatn which takes place in the first week of March every year.
We’ll ride a couple of days around our farm Saltvík following nice trails along the seaside and spend one of our regular riding days at Lake Mývatn riding on the frozen lake which is quite an extraordinary experience for all riders. Included are also some sightseeing to nice places nearby. We’ll visit waterfalls, lava formations, and volcanic hot spots and spend an afternoon/evening at the newly established Geosea natural baths relaxing after the daily activities. Included in the price is full board, accommodation, all travel from and to Reykjavík before and after the tour. We offer only one departure for this tour, so early booking is recommended.
Starting point is the domestic airport in Reykjavík for a flight to Akureyri. In Akureyri we will pick you up for a 1 hour bus drive to our farm Saltvík.
We start the first day with a nice and easy ride from Saltvík farm along the coastline with great view across the arctic sea!
This day we will join a group of riders (mainly locals who come driving their horses by trailer to the lake just to take a funride on the lake) riding over the frozen lake Mývatn. Big tractors will clear the snow on the lake to create a perfect track over the ice. As ice is a perfect surface for horses to tölt on, you will for sure feel your horse perform at it‘s best!!
The traditional ice riding competition at Lake Mývatn takes place the first weekend of March every year.
Icelandic riders come together and compete in tölt and pace riding the Icelandic horse.
It´s a great experience to watch some of the best riders and horses of Iceland meeting up and riding their horses on the ice in the amazing landscape at the Lake.
After breakfast we’ll drive the group back to Reykjavík by bus. Estimated arrival time; 15-16 o’clock.
