Wonders of the North

5 days riding adventure in the north of Iceland including some of the best riding trails of the region and fantastic scenery every day!

Included in the tour are a visit to Geosea natural baths in Husavík and a half-day of sightseeing to the famous lake Mývatn, with volcanoes, bubbling craters, rich birdlife, and the unique lava formations at Dimmuborgir.

Optional: one of the afternoons, after the ride is a whale-watching cruise from Husavík harbor out to the arctic ocean of Skálfandi Bay.

Daily rides are 15-30 km (4-6 hours) and all the nights we‘ll stay at Saltvík farm guesthouse with made-up beds in double or triple rooms with a shared bathroom. Hot tubs are available every night to relax the muscles after a day of riding.

Itinerary

Meeting point in the morning is Eagle air airport in Reykjavík for a domestic flight to Húsavík.
At the airport in Húsavík a guide from Saltvík will be welcoming the group. We drive to Saltvík farm (5 min. drive) where guests meet hosts and crew of the tour. We use this day to get to know the horses and after a short introduction on how to handle and ride Icelandic horses we‘ll ride along the coastline of the Arctic ocean and up to the hillsides near Saltvík.

We ride from Saltvík farm over great riding trails along Hvammsheiði crossing the rivers Mýrarkvísl and Laxá on our way to Aðalból farm where we leave the horses for the night and drive with our little bus back to Saltvík for overnight stay.

We start the day with a sightseeing bus tour to Lake Mývatn area wich is one of the most visited places in Iceland due to it´s amazing nature and sceneries. We‘ll make stops at hot springs, volcanoes and lavaformations and get to know some facts and stories from our guide about the history, birdlife and geology of this unique area. From Mývatn we‘ll drive to meet our horses at Aðalból farm and ride through the birchforests of Vantshlíð to Akrar farm where we leave the horses.

We ride in to the valley Reykjadalur and across the heathlands of Laxárdalsheiði to valley Laxárdalur where Laxá river runs through lavafields and birchforests. Amazing views from the highest peaks of the hillsides and great riding trails following some of the oldest paths of the area used by icelandic farmers and travellers since the settlements of Iceland.

This will be a long day in the saddle where we ride along lake Vestmannsvatn crossing Laxá river and riding along the riverbanks of Mýrarhvísl back home to Saltvík where we say goodbye to our horses before enjoying final dinner and farewell party at Saltvík with our guides and hosts.

After breakfast we drive to Reykjavík with our little bus approx 5-6 hours drive with rests. Arrival in Reykjavík around 15.00
